Seller's statement
I purchased this bike about ten years ago with 37,000 miles on it. To my knowledge I am the third owner. It has 90hp with a five-speed transmission, shaft drive, and three disc brakes. This is an earlier version, so it has eight valves instead of sixteen, and does not come with ABS braking.
(To my mind these are benefits: the 16-valve models vibrate more, and ABS systems are finicky and incredibly expensive to repair.)
The bike was shipped to Europe last June and used for touring over the summer. It is quite stable on the autobahn at 100mph and handles well in the curves. It has a Corbin seat, Fox shock on the rear, and an Aeroflow windshield. Over the summer it required two repairs, and consequently has a new electric fan and front brake cylinder. It has never used oil, but common to this model, will smoke blue briefly when started after leaving it on the sidestand.
The odometer quit about a year ago, and still reads 51,000 miles. Earlier maintenance/repair invoices document the low miles. I have not ridden it all that much over the years.
Its flaws: the plastic bodywork is scratched, chipped, and cracked in several places, so it is a driver, not a showpiece. The rear brake cylinder was replaced a few years ago but is looking worn; the part is about $50 and is easy to install. The only other quirk it has is the downshift into 3rd and 2nd gears. At higher rpm's, it is recommended to feather the clutch in briefly before downshifting (I am guessing the synchronizers are worn). If you do this, it downshifts very smoothly; if not, you might hear some gear clatter. It has been this way for ten years.
The tires are Metzler Laserteks; both have good tread, the rear is showing early signs of weathering on the sidewall. The windshield is missing one of the velcro fasteners (can be purchased from Aeroflow.com) and is also missing a small section of plastic from tip-over damage.
The riding position is Euro-tour, a compromise between cruiser and cafe positions. I am in my fifties now, and over long distance, that riding position left my wrists and shoulders aching a bit. Between that, and the cost of shipping it home, I decided to leave it with Jeff at Montana Motorcycles.
The engines on these bikes commonly go 150,000 miles; if you are looking for an inexpensive BMW I would certainly recommend having a look at this one. I have had several bikes over the years; this one is solid, fast, smooth, and stable. It gets just over 40mpg and is due for an oil change.
